In the fall of twenty-fourteen right around Halloween
When the veil is thin, I was moving in
Log cabin built of pine back in 1939
I was high on chocolate, solitude, and wine,
And the pleasure of a place I could call mine
I was up long into the night, everything was feeling right
and finally I fell fast asleep
I awoke to the glow of a full moon overhead
And gazed out the front window from up in my lofted bed
There were men walking toward me from out across the land
Were those pitchforks they were holding
Or were those guns in their hands?
They made it to the door and I knew that I was trapped
So I grabbed a banjo from the wall and started to attack
I threw it down, it shattered, then I picked up a guitar
That one hit its mark, but it would not leave a scar
I had one banjo left, which they begged me not to bust
They shouted out to calm me down: “Please listen to us!”
“We just want to play a tune with you before the daylight comes”
They were holding only instruments
There were no tools or guns
We played and we played, spirits flying high
They said, “We put this building up back in 1939
So the whole town could come to dance and play into the night”
You see, our song was so compelling that everyone we’d ever loved
Came running in and walking in and flying in like doves
And joyfully united, as we wept and as we hugged
A voice spoke loud and clear, as if summoned from above:
“Remember all the love you’ve ever felt,
Each night as you lay in bed
And daily song upon your lips
Will soothe the waking and wake the dead!"
Many blessings on your days and nights, and
Blessings on the road ahead

Alec Bowman perfectly captures the dark soil under the pastoral world of British folk with this collection of melancholy originals. Bandcamp New & Notable May 12, 2020
